In Season 3, their solipsism and callousness are even more pointed, all the more shocking, and still quite funny. In one episode, Hannah is sitting in a reception area, waiting for an appointment, when employees rush past in tears, and it becomes clear that something terrible has happened to someone there. Hannah walks up to the distraught receptionist, and her first thought is for herself. “I just wanted to know if it was safe to be on this floor of the building,” she says.
The heroes of “Looking” are, at first glance, handsome and almost indistinguishably pleasing: They have different personalities, styles and problems (mostly minor), but they are wryly self-aware, make one another laugh and share a fundamental decency that is both commendable and a little boring.
